Break of structure vs market structure shift
- Market structure
The chart gives you the same candle for two opposite situations. A swing point breaks. Price pushes through a level that held before. What it means depends entirely on which way the market was already going.
A break of structure continues the trend
A break of structure — BOS — happens when price breaks beyond a previous swing point in the direction of the existing trend.
In an uptrend, price takes out a previous swing high and the trend continues upward. In a downtrend, price takes out a previous swing low and the trend continues downward.
That is all a break of structure is: evidence that the move already underway is still underway.
A market structure shift breaks against the trend
A market structure shift — MSS — happens when price breaks a swing point against the prevailing trend.
In a downtrend, price breaks above a swing high. That is not continuation. It is the first evidence of a potential reversal. In an uptrend, price breaks below a swing low, and the same logic applies in reverse.
The distinction is the whole thing
The candle looks identical. The chart does not label it. The only thing separating a break of structure from a market structure shift is the trend it happened in — which means neither can be read without first establishing the trend on the timeframe being read.
Call a market structure shift a break of structure, and you will add to a position while the market turns against it. Call a break of structure a market structure shift, and you will fade a trend that is still running.
This is the most common error in applying Smart Money Concepts, and it is not subtle. It comes from reading the break in isolation.
Structure exists at more than one scale
A further wrinkle. A move can be bearish on the daily chart while its internal structure — the smaller swings inside the larger move — turns bullish for a stretch.
A break of internal structure is not a break of the external trend. The two get confused constantly, and the confusion is expensive, because it makes a counter-trend bounce look like a reversal.
In the 21 October session this is worked through live on gold from 6:24 — an internal market structure shift inside a bearish daily trend, which is a different thing from the daily trend reversing.
What this does not tell you
Knowing the difference tells you what happened. It does not tell you which swing points count as structural rather than noise, what makes a break valid, or where a trade would go if one were taken.
Those are decisions. What the live sessions show, twice a week and free, is the reading being done out loud — including the days when the answer was to wait.
